MSTP Courses at Northwestern University, 2002-2003
MSTP Research Seminar ("Journal Club") in 2002-2003
Facilitated by graduate faculty, first and second year MSTP students
conduct a weekly research seminar (journal club) presenting research
articles in several major research areas. The goals of MSTP are to
learn how to critically read and interpret research literature and
how to write and critique a research proposal. Once a year students
write a research proposal and present it to their peers. Each proposal
is reviewed by at least one graduate faculty preceptor and by one
peer.
MSTP Grand Rounds
Throughout all years of training, MSTP students participate in MSTP
Grand Rounds held approximately every third week at the Chicago campus.
Two MSTP students (one in the clinical phase and the other in the
research phase) conduct MSTP Grand Rounds. The learning goals are:
to review clinical principles and practices, scientific progress in
the diagnosis and treatment, and their interrelationship; to practice
communication skills; and to develop an understanding of the patient,
physician-scientist, and society interactions. The clinical phase
student (third or fourth year medical student) presents a clinical
case with review of systems, differential diagnosis, relevant laboratory,
imaging, pharmacology, treatment, and outcomes. The research phase
student presents a recent basic science research paper related to
the case study. MSTP Grand Rounds is held in a discussion format,
with all students contibuting to differentials. All MSTP students
attend and active participation is encouraged.
