The 13th Annual MSTP Student-Faculty Retreat was held on Sunday morning through Monday afternoon, August 12-13, 2007
at The Abbey Resort in Fontana, Wisconsin, on beautiful Lake Geneva. The retreat provides
time for MSTP students and faculty to gather in a relaxed setting, afforded opportunities to build community
through scientific exchange (research talks and research poster presentation),
professional development (faculty keynote speaker, alumna
speaker), and a variety of activities, including swimming and water skiing in Lake Michigan, biking, and hiking. Dr. Todd Kuiken (NU MSTP Class of 1990) was the Alumni Speaker and Dr. Alan Hauser was the MSTP Faculty Speaker at the 2007 Retreat.

Todd Kuiken , M.D., Ph.D., Associate Professor, Departments of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Biomedical Engineering at Northwestern University, was the Alumni Speaker at the 2007 Retreat.
Dr. Kuiken’s research team is working to develop a neural-machine interface to improve the function of artificial limbs. The main research focus of the lab is developing a technique to use nerve transfers for improvement of myoelectric prosthesis control. Click here for more information on Dr. Kuiken's research.
Anjen Chenn , M.D., Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Pathology at Northwestern University, was the Faculty Speaker at the 2007 Retreat.
His current research is focused on determining the factors that regulate the production and differentiation of neurons in the brain. Despite many hypotheses about how brain size is regulated, few have been tested experimentally. His lab uses a variety of approaches to try to identify the factors that control the production of neural progenitors and neurons during brain development. He has received numerous awards and honors, including the Eppendorf and Science Prize for Neurobiology, and the Distinguished Scientist Award from the Sontag Foundation.
